Seek First

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you."
Matthew 6:33

Your eyes wander from their goal. Your heart aches to snatch up the things that will instantly gratify it. A tumultuous ocean, you spin in circles, searching for a way out of your desperation. You begin to ask yourself why you always want the things that'll just make your life harder in the long run.

Your desires aren't in line with the Lord's, and it's eating at your soul. You're ignoring his calls to you—to return from the darkness, to come back to his plan. His arms reach for you, but the tangible and easy life call to you, tempting you.

And just like that, you've fallen even farther from God than before. Yet he's still there, waiting for you to turn back to him. He knows that soon you'll run back. When you do, these words will be falling from his lips: "My child, follow the dreams I place on your heart, and our desires will become one."

Delight yourself in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
(Psalm 37:4 ESV)

Don't fuss over the things our culture places worth in. Stop yourself every day and ask yourself, "Why am I doing this?" I think the answers to some things will shock you. We are called to seek God and his righteousness, even in our everyday actions—even the subconscious ones. So take a step back often to evaluate your motives for your actions.

Keep your heart set on God. He'll give you what you need, and he'll reward you for your faithfulness. He'll keep you safe, and he'll give you the gifts he's promised. Read Matthew 6:25-34. We're clearly reassured that if we seek God before we worry about clothing, food, social status—or anything else, that he'll take care of us.

If we dedicate our lives to him and to the purpose he's given us, those will become secondary things. God will always provide, and we'll know and grow to love him even more because of it. Our desires are meant to match his. And if they do, everyday worries will begin to slip away.

So, dear heart, take God's hand. Remember to always seek him first, and the rest will come. Set your eyes on him. Together, you'll accomplish many beautiful things.

  1. Thank you for this reminder. It's a beautiful thing, how He has us and everyone, everything else in His hands. How we can run back to Him. How His plans are sovereign and awesome. How we are safe and loved in His hold.

I CANNOT GAH ENOUGH OVER THIS POST. eep. ^.^ Literally this is so beautiful and really just COMFORTING to me! idk but the word comforting is coming to mind/heart so I'm taking it. This is comforting. Do you ever feel like, "WHOA, I'm being rather tightly HUGGED by the maker of the universe??" it's kind of an awesome feeling. x)

SO I LOVED how you talked about pulling back and asking yourself, "Why am I doing this?" and it's actually SO FUNNY because me and my mom were intently discussing this the other night so that's just a really awesome coincidence that you brought it up here. ^.^ IT'S SO TRUE and so important. There should be purpose in everything we do -- and that purpose should be Love. We're designed by Love and designers of Love. And we just need MORE OF IT. true love that never runs out ♥

    This is fabulous thank you.
